On April 15, 2026, the Government of Canada officially launched the Artificial Intelligence Sovereign Compute Infrastructure Program (SCIP), a national initiative aimed at building one of the world's most advanced AI supercomputing systems.

The program is designed to expand Canada's domestic AI compute capacity, support researchers and innovators, and strengthen Canada's technological sovereignty.

In May 2026, the Government of Canada and TELUS announced plans to expand Canada's sovereign AI infrastructure through multiple new AI facilities in British Columbia.

The initiative follows strong market demand for domestic AI computing capacity and represents one of Canada's largest AI infrastructure development efforts.

BC Hydro Launches Competitive Power Allocation Program

As AI data centers become major electricity consumers, the Province of British Columbia and BC Hydro launched a dedicated clean power allocation process for AI and data center projects.

The initiative is intended to ensure that high-value infrastructure projects receive access to clean electricity while maintaining grid reliability.

Up to $700 Million to Expand National AI Capacity

Under the Canadian Sovereign AI Compute Strategy, the federal government is investing up to CAD $700 million to strengthen Canada's domestic AI computing infrastructure and attract private-sector investment.

Wonder Valley AI Data Centre Park is listed by Alberta Major Projects as a major AI data centre industrial park near Grande Prairie. The project is especially important because it combines AI data centre development with large-scale dedicated energy infrastructure.

According to Alberta Major Projects, Phase 1 includes foundational infrastructure and a proposed 1.4 GW off-grid power system using Alberta’s natural gas and geothermal resources.
